Slayer je osnovan 1981 u Americi, a osnuju ga Jeff Hanneman i Kerry King. Bendu se pridruzuju i Tom Araya i Dave Lombardo.
Oni skidaju stvari Iron Maiden-a i Judas Priest-a i sviraju ih po pabovima u Juznoj Kaliforniji.
Prvobitno ime koje su dali bendu bilo je "Dragonslayer", ali nakoz izlaska istoimenog filma oni menjaju ime u "Slayer".
Vec 1986 kada su izbacili svoj prvi album Reign in Blood - moglo se videti da su Trash -Metal bend koji obecava.
Zbog serijskih ubica, satanizma, religijski temi u pesmama - imali su problema kako sa crkvom i raznim religiskim grupama - tako i sa vladom...
Slayer svoju originalni sastav menja kada je bubnjar Lombardo je napustio bend 1992., ali on se vratio se 2003. U medjuvremenu Slayer je imao drugog bubnjara: Paul Bostaph-a.
